More artistic leaders are looking for an alternative to sports metaphors in ministry.
I think that it is high time that we start to really dig in and ask ourselves why we do what we do systematically, structurally and systemically in the church. It seems that we see something that works somewhere else or in some other part of business and we baptize it and make it our own.
This is what happened with the whole “Team” metaphor from business. A ton of churches use the words team and action plan or even coach and task force, but is this truly relevant? I think that has to be decided church by church and person by person.
At the Tapestry, years ago we worked through this issue with words and found that we are “family.” So, we call our groups of leaders, “families…” There is “leader family,” “worship family,” and coach family.” We have others as well, but this is the basic idea. We wanted to function in a “family” and “friends” kind of mindset.
So, with that said, we are always still open to words like “coach.” As a matter of fact, we call our elders; “coaches.” However, again, this is just something we felt comfortable with as a family or a church.
I challenge everyone out there to pray and spend time exploring both GOD and who you are and find deep within yourselves your unique words, ideas, programs and such and let us all stop simply baptizing everything from the business world, holywood and even other churches.
Sound good?
Blessings!
