Why We Worship Conferences were a core of the Vineyard experience in the earlydays of the Association of Vineyard Churches. There was something precious that happened in a small group over 30 years ago as well as at Canyon High School. Calvary Chapel was stirring, people were expressing their heartfelt emotion and feeling to GOD in ways never dreamed of and GOD was expressing HIS heart back.
Something must have struck a chord in the Holy Spirit in those days as people came from all around to encounter a GOD who was more than stained glass and pews. A GOD who was alive and could be experienced. A GOD who loved them, who would move through the room as they sang and wept. Who was drawing prodigal sons and daughters to come home.
“Come Holy Spirit” was more than a byline. It was an invitation. And HE did come! “Everyone Gets to Play” wasn’t the tagline for churches trying to get people to sign up for ministry roles, it meant something more. “Touching the Father’s Heart” was something more than a CD series. It was a lifestyle, a hunger, a response to One who had healed, freed, and embraced.
And there was something exciting about a group of people wholly devoted, totally united, tearing down dividing walls, desiring more than sermons and sacrament. The Justice, the Social change came from outflow of encounter instead of program or process.
This conference, “Why We Worship… Again,” is just the beginning of a conversation inviting us to draw back to the place where it all started as a movement. It’s a call to reinvestigate the phases of worship, the intimacy of worship, the heart of the worshiper, the desire of the worshiped and even the story of the catalytic moments that began this thing we know as the Vineyard.
And what better way to do that than to ask some of the original worshipers to tell their story, sharing their experiences and their insight, inviting us to worship again.
In a day when everyone does contemporary music and everyone has production and almost no church in America has a week pass without the lead of a guitar, let’s dial down, turn down the lights, turn off the perfection and return to the heart of worship. Come Worship Again… Anew…
Worship, the act of freely giving love to God, forms and informs every activity of the Christian’s life. -John Wimber
So, may we reintroduce a few people to you. These are some of the parents of Vineyard worship. They will be sharing their story with you. These precious pioneers were there in the very earliest days of the Vineyard. Here you will find the first worship leader at Carol and John’s small group, writers of some songs you know such as, “Holy & Anointed One,” “The Air I Breathe,” “Mighty Savior,” & “Father” and so much more.

Dear Friends at Tapestry Church,
I’m sorry I have not been able to contact you over the phone, so now I am sending you a letter to give you more background about myself and what I’ll be doing in the fall. My name is Rico and I have finished my final year at Towson University after fours years with a major in Religious Studies and a minor in Family Studies. During my senior year I trained and completed a marathon; working at my school’s administration building and preparing for life outside of college. For me things have changed so much since I went into college and I would like to share with you as to how. Growing up I did not have a good sense of family due to the fact of strongly did not get along with one another. My experience was so bad that I was put into a foster family, shaking the foundations of my life very hard. My outlook on life was very unoptimistic and I saw no joy in my current life.
When I came into college I had no real direction in what to do, since no one in my family had went to college before. I also did not have a good view of God or of what it meant to be a Christian. However, I found a great Christian group to be a part of which has greatly helped me in my life while in college and beyond it. For the last four years, I have been involved with an organization called Campus Crusade for Christ. The aim of Campus Crusade is broken up into three parts. The first is helping students to be introduced to Christ through conversations, outreach events, or media. The second is building them up through life changing community which includes mentoring relationships and learning how to tell others about Christ. The third and final part is sending students out and taking the message of the gospel to the world. This can be on a mission’s trip or even to their work place.
Their mission is helping build spiritual movements everywhere, so that everyone knows someone who truly follows Jesus Christ. As I have grown in my relationship with the Lord, I learned how to share my faith and help new believers grow in theirs as well. It has been exciting to see how God has used me to reach others with the Gospel in this country and even in Venezuela last year. Through many conferences, mission trips and interactions with friends in Campus Crusade, my faith has grown so much. I now recognize just how great God is and how I have a family through him. This fall, I have been blessed with the great opportunity to be an intern at Towson University.
We are seeing God move in unique ways at Towson University and it will be an honor in being a part of it. Currently Campus Crusade at Towson is reaching out to colleges in the nearby Baltimore area such a University of Baltimore and University of Maryland Baltimore County. I am thrilled to have a chance to reach out to these campuses more deeply and others. Before I go to Towson in the fall, I face the challenge of raising my financial support. Like many other missions organizations, Campus Crusade for Christ Workers must raise all of their financial support.
My goal is to have all of my support by August 1st. As I take this large step of faith to serve the Lord in ministry, would you prayerfully consider joining me as partner in ministry by financially supporting me for $100 per month or some other amount?
I will call you in about one week to see what you have decided and to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for considering my need.
Yours in Christ,
Ricardo Silkworth
