The thing about horror

The best horror films, in my opinion, are the ones in which the monster is a thing that is very nearly unknown. There are movies like Alien, or I am Legend, which are great horror or sci-fi thriller movies right alongside with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, or The Ring in which you see the monster, and the movie is still frightening.
But then there are movies like The Tooth Fairy… at least I think that's what it's called. And it was a great horror flick until you saw the evil monster. Then it was just kind of boring. Now movies like Super 8 – they get it right.
I saw Super 8, the other night and I loved it. Just like one of my other favorite sci-fi horror films Event Horizon, you never see the monster. InEvent Horizon, the monster doesn't even exist in the same plane of being as we do. The ship has to go through a crazy hole in time and space so the monster can get at the people inside and the power it exerts over them all through the space ship is absolutely terrifying.
I think life is that way too. There is a lot of things of which we are frightened, but once faced turn out to be nothing more than cheap special effects rendered by our own over-active imaginations. And here's the real thin that I loved about super 8 that makes it my new all-time favorite horror flick. You don't see the monster, but you do see the creature.
Catch the difference?
By the time you see the so called "monster" you have come to understand it, and it is no longer frightening. It's just an overgrown ET. Of course you can see it now. And just like with our real life fears, when we see them for what they are, and replace them with compcrudion – then there is nothing to keep us from facing it.
"For we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of love, power and sound mind."

The Right Kind of Help | Oswald Chambers

And I, if I am lifted up . . . will draw all peoples to Myself -John 12:32

Very few of us have any understanding of the reason why Jesus Christ died. If sympathy is all that human beings need, then the Cross of Christ is an absurdity and there is absolutely no need for it. What the world needs is not "a little bit of love," but major surgery.

When you find yourself face to face with a person who is spiritually lost, remind yourself of Jesus Christ on the cross. If that person can get to God in any other way, then the Cross of Christ is unnecessary. If you think you are helping lost people with your sympathy and understanding, you are a traitor to Jesus Christ. You must have a right-standing relationship with Him yourself, and pour your life out in helping others in His way- not in a human way that ignores God. The theme of the world's religion today is to serve in a pleasant, non-confrontational manner.

But our only priority must be to present Jesus Christ crucified- to lift Him up all the time (see 1 Corinthians 2:2). Every belief that is not firmly rooted in the Cross of Christ will lead people astray. If the worker himself believes in Jesus Christ and is trusting in the reality of redemption, his words will be compelling to others. What is extremely important is for the worker's simple relationship with Jesus Christ to be strong and growing. His usefulness to God depends on that, and that alone.

The calling of a New Testament worker is to expose sin and to reveal Jesus Christ as Savior. Consequently, he cannot always be charming and friendly, but must be willing to be stern to accomplish major surgery. We are sent by God to lift up Jesus Christ, not to give wonderfully beautiful speeches. We must be willing to examine others as deeply as God has examined us. We must also be sharply intent on sensing those Scripture pcrudages that will drive the truth home, and then not be afraid to apply them.

Thoughts from the Weekend 2011-11-21 | pd

Hey Guys,

A few thoughts from the weekend.
1 – How awesome is it to see the Holy Spirit come during worship or even a baby dedication and GET ALL OVER PEOPLE! WOW!
2 – How awesome is it to see revival stir up? Don't you come hoping that it will go deeper and get stronger???? WOW!
3 – How cool is our KIDDOS' MINISTRY????? The literal leadership that is there and the fire that Lori and now Joan bring to this ministry is STIRRING! WOW!
4 – What about having youth that are ENGAGED in the service? I am blown away every week that they come, stay, get involved, play instruments, sing, and cut up with us and each other every week. BLOWN AWAY!
5 – The relationships. I come every week now LONGING to be together and worship. My favorite thing about our church is what happens when we make music together. The worship is where I am at now. And the Father's heart is stirring people for more.

What are your favorite things? Email me and I will add them for next week.

Guys, I LOVE YOU! Thank you for making my life worth living!!!!!

And by the way, Lori and I are really being stirred right now by turning on IHOP's 24/7 praise and prayer session. This weekend I've never felt so much gut burn. I am on FIRE!

Small World, Big God

The youth group is studying a devotional that had a very powerful
story in it last week that I wanted to share with everyone.

A young man was attending a Christian event in a football stadium
where tens of thousands of people were gathered. At the altar call
time,  he made his way down onto the field to ask a counselor to pray
for him. An older man who was a volunteer for the night met him at the
front. As they talked, the younger man said he knew it was time for
things to change in his life. The volunteer les him through a prayer
to receive Christ and they talked about his new faith. They were
almost finished when the younger man added "wait. One more thing. Will
you pray for my wife? We've been married for six years, but because I
wasn't a Christian her family wouldn't give their blessing or even
come to our wedding.  My wife hasn't spoken to her parents for six
years."  There was silence.  Finally the counselor asked, "What's your
wife's name?" The answer brought more silence.  Finally the older said
in a quiet voice "I'd like to introduce myself to you.  I'm your
father-in-law."

Malachi 4:5-6
Look, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the great and
awesome Day of the Lord comes.  And he will turn the hearts of fathers
to [their] children and the hearts of children to their fathers.
Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse."

Perspective

Perspective: def n: 1) A picture drawn in such a way, esp. one appearing to enlarge or extend the actual space or to give the effect of distance. 2) a mental view or outlook.
That being said, let me paint a picture for you. I'd suggest you close your eyes to better envision this but then your eyes would be closed and you couldn't read this so let's skip that step.
Picture this. Take a journey beyond sight and sound…. no wait.
Ok seriously now. Imagine a day worker hanging out outside home depot. Imagine a teenage girl – maybe 17 or 18 – who is pregnant and unmarried. Now imagine a kid that grew up in the projects.
Now take that picture in your head of those three people and call them Joseph, Mary, and Jesus.
That's not perspective, that's what scholars call a close approximation to the historical truth. Joseph lost his family land and had to take up "Carpentry" which meant less of building tables and cabinets and more working on construction projects. Mary was a young girl (the word so often translated as "virgin" has a connotation or crudumption of a young age) and was unmarried when she was pregnant with Jesus – teen pregnancy. Because of the financial strain and hardship in the region due to various taxes and the constant fight against roman rule, it is unlikely that Jesus grew up anywhere other than the 1st century equivalent of the projects.
Perspective is what happens when you call every day worker the man who raised Jesus, when you call every pregnant teen the woman who raised Jesus, and when you call every kid trying to make it on the streets "Jesus."
"I crudure you,: whatever you did for on of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me." Matthew 25:40

THIRD OPTION MEN – I Hate Your Cell Phone

By Christian Lemon  Originally published at http://www.thirdoptionmen.org/blog/hate-cell-phone/  on March 22, 2011.

I hate your cell phone.  I hate the way your head is always bent over your cell phone.  I hate the way the screen lights your face at night.  I hate the way you text in traffic.  I hate your apps.  I hate how you feel the need to be connected to an infinite electronic world every second of the day.  I hate how every question can be answered by your phone.  I hate how it gives you directions.  I hate, that with your phone, you can find your way.

I hate that you might be reading this on your cell phone.

I hate that your cell phone gives you comfort.  Your cell phone is always with you, just within reach.  You feel lost without it.  Your cell phone will never gather dust.  Your cell phone will never be forgotten.  It may be upgraded, or traded in for a new model, but your cell phone will endure.  You will not give it up.

I hate that when you need a little light, you pull out your cell phone.  When you gaze at the night sky, you do it through the eyes of your cell phone.  When you need to talk someone you use your cell phone – not to talk, but to send a message.  Your cell phone separates you.  Your cell phone divides you.  Your cell phone keeps you a safe distance from the others, the others and their cell phones.

I hate when you meet someone for the first time you make sure they see your cell phone.  You both discuss cell phones.  You talk about how much you love your cell phones.  You list all the amazing features of your cell phone.  You both laugh about your reliance on cell phones, and you proudly proclaim you couldn’t live without it.  You sit, within inches of one another, but are somewhere else, taken away by your cell phones.

I find myself jealous.  Jealous of your cell phone.  I wish I was the first thing you reached for in the morning.  I wish you carried me with you everywhere.  I wish I was what you brag about, read about, thought about.  I wish I was the reason you bonded with someone.  I wish you felt the burning need to talk about me, whenever you met someone new.  I wish I could shed a little light when you need it.  I wish you would allow me to provide a little direction when you are lost.  I wish you would think of me when you gaze at the night sky.

I’m jealous.  Always have been.  Always will be.  I hate your cell phone.
